Civitas is an independent non-profit organization with headquarters in Bamenda, Cameroon, which militates for the respect of human rights, fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and environmental protection.
Name
The name “Civitas” is drawn from Latin. It means “Citizen Rights.”
Mission
Our primary objective is to help every individual enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We shall attain our objective by carrying out research, investigations, campaigns and direct intervention to promote respect human rights.
Our secondary objective is to elaborate and promote environmental protection initiatives.
Strategic Approach
Through objective research, investigations, seminars, campaigns and direct intervention, Civitas shall expose human rights violations – including violations resulting from environmental degradation – work with the authorities to hold perpetrators accountable and stand with victims to ensure that they enjoy all the rights laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards, without discrimination or prejudice on race, color, sex, nationality, language, disability, ailment or other status.
Registration
Civitas is duly registered (registration No. 014/E.29/1111/vol.8/APPB) and legally recognized in Cameroon in conformity with the provisions of Law No. 90/053 of 19 December 1990.
Independence
Civitas is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. The organization is mainly funded by membership dues and public donations from individuals who believe in its aims and objectives.
Membership
Membership to the organization is open to individuals who believe in the aims and objectives of Civitas. Membership is subject to termination when it is established that a member engages in activities that undermine the aims and objectives of the organization. Each member has one vote in decision making.
Partnership
Civitas is open to collaboration with other national or international human rights organizations or civil society groups.
